Ana Betancourt de Mora: An Example of Patriotism

Camagüey-born Ana Betancourt de Mora, tireless advocate for the rights of the Cuban women, died in Madrid on February 7, 1901.
Ana left the comforts of her house, because she came from a wealthy family, to join the struggles for the independence of her homeland, since she always favoured collective good over individual interests. When her husband joined the troop of General Ignacio Agramonte, she bid him farewell without much hesitation and encouraged him by saying: “Fight for you and for me, fight for freedom”.
