Holguin Water Reservoirs Diminish
The insufficient rainfall registered until January this year, has caused a drop in water reservoirs of the province of Holguin, up to the 79 percent of the total capacity of dams.
According to Mayelín Gonzalez, a specialist at the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH) in the territory, the accumulated rainfall in January was only 46 millimetres, 69 percent of the regular record for that period.
She added that by the beginning of February, the water stored in dams and spillways administered by the INRH reached 449 million cubic meters, of which four million decreased in barely a week, due to low rainfall record.
Gonzalez noted that January, 2011, showed better figures since 62mm of falls were registered in the province. By then, reservoirs stored 84,2 percent of their total capacity, which stands for 568 million cubic meters.
