¿Cómo van a lograrlo?

Banes Girl Donates Archeological Pieces

The Cuban municipality of Banes boasts of the large number of archeological findings revealed there. Photo: the rural site of Sama. d Little Meliza Zaldivar Siam is a fifth grader at the Jose Tey elementary school, in the Cuban city of Banes. There she is going through the history of the country’s early people. By chances in life, she was playing in the backyard of her house, located at 134B, Juzgado Street.

It happened that she suddenly took notice of two archeological pieces, quite similar to the illustration on her book of the History of Cuba.

“I was playing in the yard and saw something, I picked it up I took it to my grandpa, Meliza said.

My grandpa said it might belong to the Cuban aboriginal people. Later I found near a coconut tree the other piece, which I now know is a pestle, Meliza added.

History helped me figure out these are important pieces, therefore, I donated to the Museum,” she said very happy.

Little Meliza and her classmates have been going to the Indocubano Bani Museum with the goal of understanding the life of Cuban aboriginal populations.

In fact Meliza donated a mortar and a pestle, said Luis Rafael Quiñones, a specialist in Museology who asserted those items belonged to the country’s early community.

“This finding talks of the people’s sense of ownership to the Museum, and the local history, mainly children. This is a very significant stance,” Quiñones extoled.

Archeological findings have successively happened in Banes, Quiñones said, and added “…take this year for example that the Indocubano Bani Museum has increased its stock with 20 people’s donations.”

The Indocubano Bani Museum is a cultural institution only of its type in the Caribbean and Latin America. Thus gesture like that of little Meliza corroborate the interest of the younger generations in keeping up Banes history and traditions, and thus safeguarding for Banes its title of Cuba’s Archeological Capital. / Source: Radio Banes / Translated by Radio Angulo.
