At 79 percent of reservoirs filled in Cuba

This volume constitutes one of the highest recorded at the beginning of the wet period, which extends from May to October, in the last five decades, the Granma newspaper said today.

The 242 reservoirs that are administered by the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) currently store almost seven billion cubic meters of water.

This figure exceeds by more than three billion cubic meters the amount collected on the same date last year, confirmed Argelio Omar Fernández, specialist of the Directorate for the Rational Use of Water of the INRH.

The dams supplying water to the population show a very favorable state as a whole, with 78 percent of useful fill, as well as the 15 underground aquifers connected to the main cities and tourist poles.

As for the behavior of rainfall in the dry period, which covers from November 1 to April 30, the accumulated average national level was 477.5 millimeters, 143 percent of the historical average.

The eastern and central regions were the most favored by the rains, falling 667.7 millimeters and 457.7 millimeters, 165 and 161 percent of the average, respectively, while in the west it rained less, with 284.4 millimeters, the 90 percent.
